Erratic Surface Torque and Drillstring Vibrations Eliminated in Underreaming Operations

Sakhalin Energy Investment Company, Ltd. needed to underream a 24-in directionally drilled pilot hole to 28 in offshore Sakhalin without causing damaging drillstring vibration or erratic surface torque. SLB was brought in to help reduce the risk of BHA damage and avoid nonproductive time in the harsh drilling environment.

SLB provided an integrated drilling solution that combined prejob BHA modeling, a 17000 series drilling-type underreamer, TeleScope high-speed telemetry-while-drilling service, and a modular vibration chassis for real-time vibration monitoring. The operation successfully enlarged the pilot hole to 28 in with no shock, vibration, or surface torque fluctuations, and the 24-in surface liner was run to its planned depth of 374 m.
