Engineered Completion Design Increases Reservoir Contact and Productivity in the Wolfcamp Shale

Clayton Williams Energy partnered with SLB to address the challenge of meeting production targets in horizontal wells drilled into the Wolfcamp Shale, where heterogeneous rock, high pressure, and clay content made economic production difficult. The operator needed a better completion approach than conventional geometric designs, and SLB’s ThruBit logging services and Mangrove engineered stimulation design were used as part of the effort.

SLB integrated ThruBit logging data with Mangrove stimulation design in the Petrel platform to place perforation clusters in intervals with more favorable stress conditions and optimize the completion. The first horizontal Wolfcamp well using this engineered workflow increased 90-day cumulative oil production by 39% versus the best offset well, improved successful stages by 33%, and saved an average of 1.5 days per well on coiled tubing cleaning operations; the customer then applied the approach in 12 additional wells.
