ENAP Ecuador Saves 2.3 Drilling Days and Drills 16-in Section in a Single Run Using Customized AxeBlade Bit, MDC Field

Empresa Nacional del Petróleo (ENAP) in Ecuador needed to drill a challenging 16-in section of a J-profile well through the Tiyuyacu Formation in Mauro Davalos Cordero Field. The interbedded claystone, sandstone, and conglomerates created a high risk of impact damage, poor dynamics, and bit balling, so ENAP turned to SLB for a customized bit solution.

SLB’s Smith Bits team designed a customized AxeBlade bit with Stinger conical diamond elements, FireStorm high-impact PDC cutters, extra stabilization, and antiballing features to improve stability and aggressiveness. The bit drilled the section in a single run, averaged 7,371 ft, exceeded planned ROP by 60%, and saved 2.3 drilling days while emerging in good condition.
