Dual-ESP Completion Accelerates Oil Production in Stacked Reservoir for OMV

OMV Austria E&P wanted to accelerate oil production from stacked reservoirs in the Erdpress field, where the layers had very different pressure profiles that caused crossflow and reduced output when produced together. SLB proposed a dual-ESP completion using engineered electric submersible pumping technology to enable commingled production from both reservoir layers while maintaining control and flexibility.

SLB implemented a dual-ESP system with separate pumps, sensors, and check valves to prevent crossflow and allow each layer to be monitored and optimized independently. The well achieved improved oil production by commingling flow from both layers, and allocation updates after startup shifted contributions to about 60% from the upper zone and 40% from the lower zone, while also improving reservoir knowledge and helping OMV avoid the need for an additional development well.
