DrillPlan Solution Improves Well Planning Efficiency by More Than 50%, Williston Basin

Petro-Hunt L.L.C., a Dallas-based operator in North Dakota’s Bakken region, needed to improve well design innovation and reduce bottlenecks in its well planning process for challenging HPHT unconventional wells. Traditional software workflows made it difficult for the company to create multiple planning scenarios, collaborate across disciplines, and work efficiently with service company personnel. SLB supported Petro-Hunt with a proof of concept using the DrillPlan coherent well construction planning solution in the DELFI cognitive E&P environment.

SLB’s DrillPlan solution integrated Petro-Hunt’s processes, policies, approval workflow, and automated engineering tools into a single platform for well planning and execution. The result was more than a 50% reduction in planning time, better collaboration between engineering, geology, and service companies, improved traceability and versioning, and reduced drilling risk through automated trajectory and anticollision scanning. Following the successful trial, Petro-Hunt began using DrillPlan across its well portfolio in February 2018.
