Drilling System Saves 18.5 Rig Days in Eastern Siberia

SLB worked with Eastern Siberia Operating Company, which wanted to improve directional drilling performance in 8½-in. well sections in eastern Siberia. The field presented difficult salt, hard rock, and unstable shale conditions that led to washout, vibrations, stuck drillstrings, poor borehole quality, and low ROP with previous positive displacement motor runs.

SLB optimized an integrated bottomhole assembly using an 8½-in. SHARC PDC bit with ONYX II cutters on PowerDrive X6 and PowerDrive vorteX rotary steerable systems, PowerPak steerable motors, and ASPHASOL shale inhibitor. The solution increased average ROP from 6.53 to 21.41 m/h, improved meters drilled per circulating hour from 4.77 to 12.61, and helped set field records, including a 2,644 m single run and a 3,824 m lateral. Overall, SLB saved 18.5 rig days across three wells.
