DONG E&P Steers North Sea Wells 96% in Zone in Challenging Remobilized Sand Reservoir

DONG E&P worked with SLB to address a difficult geosteering challenge in the North Sea Nini East field, where thin remobilized sandstone targets were capped by unstable shale and had to be drilled while maintaining oil/water contact standoff. The company needed to place horizontal wells accurately within the reservoir and better understand its internal structure for improved field development.

SLB used the GeoSphere reservoir mapping-while-drilling service together with surface seismic data to provide extended look-ahead imaging and real-time steering guidance. The result was two wells placed 96% in zone with no sidetracks, both tested at up to 8,000 bbl/d with minimal drawdown; one well achieved a 2,674-ft horizontal section with a 0.98 net-to-gross ratio and the other a 2,799-ft section with a 0.96 net-to-gross ratio. SLB also helped improve reservoir understanding and refine the long-term field model.
