Directional Casing-While-Drilling Technology Sets New World Record with Dubai Petroleum Establishment

Dubai Petroleum Establishment worked with SLB on an offshore Dubai directional drilling project to optimize field development in a thin oil rim and avoid nonproductive time caused by wellbore instability in reactive, unstable shales. The main drilling issues included stuck pipe, hard reaming, and packoffs, which had made the conventional approach of adding a 7-in liner necessary.

SLB recommended its Allegro CD directional casing-while-drilling service, which helped DPE drill through the unstable shale on a high-inclination trajectory, land the well in the target interval, and reach a new world record depth of 12,481 ft-MD. The solution eliminated the need for an extra interval, saved more than four days, reduced the risk of lost-in-hole costs, and lowered costs compared with the conventional method.
