Case Study: Saudi Aramco achieves gyro-equivalent while-drilling survey precision with SLB TruLink

A SLB Case Study

Preview of the Saudi Aramco Case Study

Definitive Dynamic Survey Eliminates Survey-Related Rig Time and Boosts Well Economics

Saudi Aramco worked with SLB to address the time and risk involved in static wellbore surveying during drilling. Traditional MWD surveys required stopping the drillstring every 90 ft, adding rig time, reducing drilling efficiency, and increasing stuck-pipe risk. SLB’s TruLink definitive dynamic survey-while-drilling service was evaluated as a way to capture survey data while the BHA was actively drilling.

SLB implemented TruLink across three qualification wells covering vertical, curve, and lateral sections, comparing the results with gyro surveys. The service matched static survey data closely, within 0.5° inclination and 1° azimuth, and in the lateral section achieved a perfect match against continuous gyro data. Saudi Aramco expects the technology to reduce survey time by 2 months per year and eliminate another 3 months per year of activity time related to stuck pipe, improving drilling economics.
