DeepLook-CS Crosswell Seismic Imaging Enhances Subsurface Understanding in Mature Oil Field

SLB worked with Pertamina EP, an Indonesian oil and gas operator, to address the challenge of targeting new infill drilling areas in a structurally complex mature field where poor-quality surface seismic data made subsurface interpretation difficult. In the Bunyu field offshore east Kalimantan, thick overburden, complex structure, and attenuative layers limited the ability to plan infill development wells, so Pertamina EP needed better insight into the reservoir structure and stratigraphy.

SLB implemented DeepLook-CS crosswell seismic imaging, using downhole source and receiver deployment to bypass the overburden and improve resolution. The solution delivered enhanced P- and S-wave images, revealed previously unseen structural and stratigraphic features, supported new fault interpretations, and helped identify bypassed pay zones for future development. The project also achieved a world-record 2-km crosswell acquisition separation, demonstrating SLB’s ability to generate high-quality reflection data in highly attenuative formations.
