Customized ESP Solution Optimizes Operations in the Unconventional Eagle Ford Shale

Magnum Hunter Resources worked with SLB to address the challenge of optimizing long-term production from unconventional, liquid-rich Eagle Ford shale wells while managing highly variable production rates and evaluating ESP systems as a transitional artificial lift method. Conventional ESP practices in this low-permeability, hydraulically fractured environment led to rapid production decline, overheating, and equipment wear.

SLB implemented a customized unconventional ESP solution using tailored downhole and surface equipment, real-time LiftWatcher monitoring, special operating procedures, and dedicated expert support. The result was improved lifting efficiency and much longer run life, including one ESP that operated for more than a year and achieved 1,478 starts, more than 10 times a typical ESP lifecycle, while Magnum Hunter Resources expanded the approach to additional wells.
