Complete Cased Hole Unconventional Formation Evaluation in Niobrara Shale Wells in One Run

SLB worked with Niobrara Shale Based Operating Company, which needed high-quality through-casing measurements in cased lateral wells to better define reservoir quality (RQ) and completion quality (CQ) in unconventional reservoirs. The operator was struggling to obtain reliable formation evaluation data in the lateral sections, where traditional MWD total gamma ray measurements were not sufficient.

SLB addressed the challenge with a single-run cased hole logging approach using the TuffTrac tractor, Pulsar multifunction spectroscopy service, and ThruBit Dipole through-the-bit acoustic service. The combined measurements enabled a detailed petrophysical and geomechanical model, identified marl beds and subseismic faults that had been missed before, and improved RQ/CQ assessment and fracture design inputs by refining mechanical properties such as elastic moduli and closure stress.
