A SLB Case Study
Atwood Oceanics needed to meet a retention-on-cuttings (ROC) requirement of 6.9% for offshore Gulf of Mexico drilling so it could dispose of solids overboard instead of sending them to cuttings boxes, which would add rig time and disposal costs. SLB, through its M-I SWACO solids control offering, provided a COMPACT VERTI-G low-profile cuttings dryer to help the operator achieve compliant treatment of drilled cuttings.
With the COMPACT VERTI-G dryer in place, SLB helped Atwood Oceanics average just 1.77% ROC in the first 2½ months, well below the 6.9% threshold. In a 3,694-ft underreamed section, the dryer delivered 1.33% average ROC and reclaimed 398 bbl of drilling fluid, saving USD 11,940 in transportation and handling costs plus USD 115,800 in whole mud volume, for total savings of USD 127,740.
