A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with a leading operating company to reabandon a Gulf of Mexico well that had sustained casing pressure up to 460 psi and posed well control challenges. Because the trapped pressure made rig-based plug and abandonment difficult, the operator needed a safer way to remove existing plugs and permanently abandon the well.
SLB’s Coil Tubing Services used CoilTOOLS CT intervention tools and larger-OD 2⅞-in coiled tubing with a positive displacement motor and stabilized milling system to remove the surface cement plug and core through the bridge plug while maintaining pressure control. The work was completed in less than 72 hours, saving several additional days versus a rig-based approach and helping the well be reabandoned in compliance with federal regulations.
