Cimarex Saves 26 Hours in Permian Basin with PowerDrive Archer Slimhole RSS

Cimarex Energy was drilling the Black Powder well in the Permian Basin and needed to drill out 7-in casing, build a 10°/100-ft curve, and then drill the horizontal section in one run. SLB supported the project with its PowerDrive Archer slimhole rotary steerable system and a custom SHARC drill bit for high dogleg severity drilling and geosteering.

SLB’s 4¾-in PowerDrive Archer RSS and SHARC MDSi711 bit drilled the curve on plan, geosteered the lateral, and reached TD in a single run despite an abrupt formation change. Cimarex drilled 4,787 ft in 110.3 hours, eliminated an end-of-curve trip, and saved an estimated 26 hours of rig time.
