Cimarex Energy Co. Saves Six Days of Rig Time in Permian Basin

Cimarex Energy worked with SLB to reduce drilling time in the Permian Basin while kicking off from a pilot hole cement plug and drilling a curve and lateral in a shock- and vibration-prone reservoir. The company needed a BHA and drilling approach that could complete the well efficiently in fewer runs while maintaining stability and performance.

SLB implemented a high-build-rate solution using the PowerDrive Archer vorteX motorized hybrid RSS, SHARC PDC drill bit optimization through IDEAS, and fluid modeling with VIRTUAL HYDRAULICS, along with POLY-PLUS RD and solids-control support from M-I SWACO. The result was 6 days of rig time saved, elimination of a dedicated kick-off assembly, and company records for fastest curve at 1,544 ft/d and fastest lateral at 1,956 ft/d, all achieved in a single run.
