Chesapeake Improves Footage per Bit and ROP in Abrasive Formation with EnduroBlade 360 Bit

Chesapeake Energy was looking for a more efficient way to drill the 6⅛-in. horizontal lateral section of Oklahoma’s abrasive Colony Wash play. The company wanted to increase footage per bit and reduce trips out of hole while keeping ROP at a reasonable level to lower overall well cost, and worked with SLB using EnduroBlade 360 rolling diamond element bits.

SLB recommended EnduroBlade 360 bits with 16-mm cutting elements, designed with the IDEAS integrated dynamic design and analysis platform to better withstand abrasion and maintain cutting efficiency. Across three wells, the solution increased footage and ROP, including a lateral drilled 2,885 ft at 21.1 ft/h and another drilled 4,175 ft at 23.3 ft/h, which was a record ROP for the Colony Wash play; Chesapeake Energy said it would continue running the 16-mm EnduroBlade 360 bits on future wells.
