A SLB Case Study
Chesapeake Energy worked with SLB to improve drilling efficiency in the Haynesville Shale’s intermediate section, where highly abrasive sands and lime were causing extra bit trips, lower run footage, and added nonproductive time. The goal was to drill farther with one bit past the typical 8,500-ft MD trip point and reach at least 9,500 ft MD so a more aggressive bit could be used in the lower intermediate section.
SLB used the IDEAS integrated dynamic design and analysis platform to optimize an EnduroBlade 360 rolling diamond element bit with 16-mm cutting elements for the application. The result was an additional 1,000 to 1,500 ft of bit life, fewer unnecessary trips, and equal or better overall ROP, helping Chesapeake reduce NPT and achieve greater footage per run in the intermediate section.
