A SLB Case Study
BP needed a better way to drill the 8.75-in lateral section in the Woodford Shale, where abrasive chert and pyrite typically caused bit failure and required multiple trips. SLB, through Smith Bits, used the DBOS drillbit optimization system and the IDEAS integrated dynamic design and analysis platform to help address the challenge.
SLB implemented RockStorm wear-resistant, high-impact PDC cutter technology to improve bit durability and cutting structure. The result was drilling the entire lateral with only two bits, including a record single-run footage of 5,249 ft, saving BP USD 1.056 million and 24 days versus AFE while delivering competitive ROP and repeat performance on the next well.
