Case Study: BG Group evaluates foamed cement bond and casing centralization with SLB PowerFlex service

BG Group Successfully Evaluates Foamed Cement Bond in Heavy Oil-Base Mud Environment

BG Group needed to verify foamed cement bond quality behind 9⅝-in casing in a North Sea well while drilling with heavy oil-base mud, all to satisfy NORSOK D-010 well integrity requirements. SLB addressed the challenge with its PowerFlex annular barrier evaluation service, which was designed to perform ultrasonic measurements in highly attenuative, high-weight muds and large, thick-walled casings.

Using PowerFlex, SLB evaluated casing centralization and cement quality without bias from the heavy mud. The service identified differences in centralization linked to centralizer placement, confirmed good cement bond quality, and showed cement velocity values that closely matched laboratory ultrasonic cement analyzer results, helping BG Group demonstrate that NORSOK requirements were met.
