Case Study: North Sea Operating Company drills ultraHPHT well without incident and with reduced NPT with SLB's @balance Speed X2 RCD

A SLB Case Study

Preview of the North Sea Operating Company Case Study

@balance Speed X2 RCD provides simple and reliable method to control pressure and contain drilling and formation fluids

SLB worked with North Sea Operating Company on an ultraHPHT North Sea exploration well that posed extreme drilling risks, including a high potential for influx and catastrophic consequences. The operator needed to drill deep in high-temperature, high-pressure conditions while maintaining control of drilling and formation fluids, and SLB recommended using the @balance Speed X2 rotating control device.

SLB deployed the @balance Speed X2 RCD with the @balance Speed sealed rotating system to drill the last two sections, run casing, and maintain near-constant bottomhole pressure without rigging down the equipment. The well was drilled to TD without incidents, NPT was reduced, and installation and retrieval operations were completed in under 14 minutes each; the project also set multiple North Sea records, including the deepest well drilled at 19,491 ft TVD.
