A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Irkutsk Oil Company, through the INK-Servis drilling team, to improve rate of penetration while drilling the 8.5-in curve section of a well in Eastern Siberia. The challenge was a hard carbonate formation with very high unconfined compressive strength, severe dogleg severity, and a long interval that made drilling difficult and prone to bit changes.
SLB recommended the AxeBlade ridged diamond element bit, designed with the IDEAS integrated dynamic design and analysis platform for better aggressiveness, impact resistance, and wear resistance than conventional PDC cutters. The bit delivered a 106% ROP increase versus offset-well averages, set three daily length drilled records and three field ROP records, and reached up to 637 m/d while achieving an ROP record of 36.4 m/h in the Yaraktinskoe field.
