A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with a leading Australia operating company drilling gas exploration wells in South Australia. The customer needed to maintain near-perfect verticality in a faulted, high-dip shale formation so it could complete extensive coring, wireline logging, and downhole testing, but offset wells had already shown significant deviation using mud motors and traditional rotary BHAs.
SLB recommended the PowerV vertical drilling rotary steerable system paired with a SHARC high-abrasion-resistance PDC drill bit. Using this setup, the operator drilled the 12¼-in section to 2,400 m MD with maximum inclination of 0.75° and the 8½-in section to 4,400 m TD with maximum inclination of 0.26°, while achieving 58.2 m/h ROP and saving 2 rig days versus an offset well.
