Case Study: SRC Energy achieves straighter laterals and 50% lower DLS with SLB's NeoSteer CL ABSS

At-Bit Steerable System Cuts DLS in Lateral by 50%

SRC Energy was drilling 12 monobore wells in the DJ Basin, Colorado, and wanted to complete the vertical, curve, and lateral sections in a single run as fast, smoothly, and consistently as possible. After using a standard RSS BHA on the previous half of the pad, the company saw high tortuosity and wanted to reduce dogleg severity in the upcoming wells. SLB’s NeoSteer CL at-bit steerable system was recommended to address the challenge.

SLB implemented the NeoSteer CL ABSS with closed-loop autosteering to deliver better steering control and a straighter hole. Across 12 wells, the average DLS in the tangent sections fell to 0.80°/100 ft, and lateral DLS dropped to 0.85°/100 ft from 1.52°/100 ft, a 50% reduction. The smoother wellbore also reduced friction and side forces, helping SRC Energy stay in zone longer and run production casing more easily.
