8.5-in Section Drilled in Single Run, Saving CCLS USD 400,000 in South China Sea

China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC China, Ltd. – Shenzhen) needed a reliable drilling system for a soft, faulted deepwater reservoir in the South China Sea. The company wanted to drill the landing and lateral of an 8½-in section on target in one run, while handling high dogleg severity, possible hole enlargement, and rapid steering requirements. SLB provided the PowerDrive Archer 675 rotary steerable system to help meet these drilling challenges.

Using SLB’s PowerDrive Archer 675 RSS with a PDC bit, the well was successfully landed and the lateral drilled in a single run. The system achieved the required high DLS and handled changing hole conditions, saving one BHA run and more than USD 400,000. SLB’s solution also avoided the need for a motor and changes to the casing design, and the customer plans to use the system on future wells.
