Multinational Oil and Gas Company Migrates Legacy JD Edwards Applications to Azure

A multinational oil and gas company pursuing a cloud-first strategy needed to migrate mission-critical J.D. Edwards applications running on IBM i (AS/400) as part of a data center exit and cost-reduction initiative. The legacy workloads supported 5,000 users across 18 countries and required a low-risk migration with minimal re-architecting, SOX and PII compliance, and an RPO under 30 minutes to avoid business disruption.

The company chose Skytap on Azure to lift-and-shift its IBM Power workloads, initially migrating several J.D. Edwards instances and then expanding to run production, high-availability, disaster recovery, and dev/test environments. The deployment now includes three production LPARs with over 15 TB of data across Azure availability zones, inter-region HA and replication (Rocket iCloud and ExpressRoute), and automated backups, allowing the company to close on-prem data centers, decommission IBM Power hardware, and save millions annually while running scalable, on-demand processing for global order flows.
