Chilewich Sultan, a New York-based manufacturer of furniture and high-end textiles, needed a more reliable disaster recovery solution after Hurricane Sandy knocked its critical IBM i systems offline for five days. Its daily backups and 24-hour recovery target were no longer sufficient, and building a second Power Systems environment would have been too costly.

Chilewich Sultan implemented a DR-as-a-Service solution from Skytap and Maxava, with Skytap in Microsoft Azure hosting replicas of the production environment and Maxava DR replicating about six million transactions per day in real time. The result was a much faster recovery with no data loss or significant downtime, cutting expected outage time to four hours or less and saving about two-thirds of the cost of a traditional DR setup.
