Ericsson, a global technology leader, retooled its learning and development strategy around building an easy ecosystem, a learning-first culture, and enabling business growth. The company faced an outdated, manual career and competence model and an annual planning process that didn’t prioritize the skills critical to the business, limiting transparency, internal mobility, and timely upskilling.

Since 2020 Ericsson shifted to a skills-based approach, partnering with Skillsoft to define eight global critical skills and 15 role-level foundations, and automating a talent marketplace to match skills to opportunities. The change enabled measurable skills progression, faster internal mobility, clearer career paths, and improvements in employee engagement, retention and business performance.
