Smartsheet Moves to an eLearning Platform to Help Drive $1M Revenue Target

Smartsheet, the enterprise work-management platform, needed to scale and monetize its customer training after its previous LMS couldn’t support eCommerce, certification, or a paid offering. To move from primarily free learning to paid and premium options, Smartsheet partnered with Skilljar and launched Smartsheet University (powered by Skilljar) to offer self‑paced courses, virtual instructor‑led training (VILT), in‑person ILT, and certification paths.

Using Skilljar’s LMS and integrations (including Stripe for eCommerce and Caveon for exams), Smartsheet implemented subscription, a la carte, and certification revenue models and relaunched SmartU. Skilljar enabled a straightforward transition and rapid monetization—Smartsheet sold just shy of $1M in subscriptions in the first six months, is on track for a $1M+ annual revenue target, and saw strong usage gains (enrollments up 69% YoY in 2022 vs. 2021 and multi‑year growth in active students), making the program self‑sustaining.
