Current and potential customers needed practical, scalable approaches to improve access to safe water and sanitation and to advance related issues such as health and education. The RELX Group responded by creating the RELX Group Environmental Challenge to identify and support replicable, community‑engaged projects, offering winners access to resources including ScienceDirect, RELX’s Scientific, Technical & Medical database.

RELX Group runs the annual competition (now in its seventh year) with clear selection criteria and cash prizes—$50,000 for first place and $25,000 for second—plus one year’s free access to nearly 250,000 Environmental Sciences articles on ScienceDirect. By combining funding, visibility and research access, RELX Group has helped scale innovative projects that demonstrate measurable practical applicability, equity of access and local impact.
