Social Intranet to Support Retail and Commercial Banking Operations in 40 Countries

ING Bank, a major global financial institution, faced the challenge of breaking down internal communication silos and enhancing employee engagement. Their existing intranet lacked the social computing features needed to connect 70,000 employees across 40 countries for effective knowledge sharing. To support its strategic OneBank initiative, the bank required a more flexible and collaborative platform and partnered with vendor Sitrion to enhance its Microsoft SharePoint environment.

Sitrion’s social workplace solution provided the rich social intranet features that SharePoint lacked, enabling the new "Buzz" platform. The implementation led to improved cross-department and cross-border communication, a more effective employee onboarding process, and the rapid growth of active internal communities. Early results included a decline in email traffic and more efficient resolution of workplace issues. Sitrion’s technology was crucial in transforming internal communications and embedding social collaboration into the bank's DNA.
