Sun & Ski Sports, a leading U.S. specialty outdoor retailer with 30 stores and a large ecommerce presence, wanted to improve onsite product recommendations to drive more relevant cross-sells and higher revenue. The Digital Merchandising team set out to test recommendation placements and compare their existing recommendations provider against SiteSpect’s product‑recommendation engine to determine which placements and algorithms performed best.
Using SiteSpect’s integration to run side‑by‑side experiments during Black Friday/Cyber Week, they found the Product Detail Page drove 59% of recommendation clicks, then ran an A/B/C test on PDPs comparing two SiteSpect variations (brand‑boosted vs. non‑boosted “People Also Like”) against their existing provider. SiteSpect lifted Revenue per Visit by 5.8%, generating over $117K in net proceeds from the test; the brand‑boosted variation increased purchases but slightly lowered average order value, and both boost strategies produced similar RPV. They plan to further refine recommendations using historical data and mobile optimization.
