A large women's clothing retailer set out to revamp its product detail pages to reduce friction and guide shoppers to purchase. The optimization team suspected that having product recommendations both in a right‑hand sidebar and lower on the page was distracting, so they tested removing the sidebar recommendations to streamline visuals and widen the product details and options.

Removing the sidebar recs and widening the PDP led to a 5% decrease in conversions, a 75% drop in product recommendation click‑throughs (while bottom recommendations remained), about 4% more search requests, 6% fewer PDP views, and 2% fewer add‑to‑carts. Because the test revealed a negative impact, the brand kept the original layout and validated the importance of testing before rolling changes out sitewide.
