Creating An Accessible Website

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), a higher-education institution managing 23 sites, faced a legal requirement to meet Ontario’s AODA accessibility standards (WCAG Level A) by Jan. 1, 2014. After redesigning templates in 2012, much legacy content still contained accessibility issues, so the team needed a way to monitor multiple sites and prioritize fixes efficiently.

UOIT adopted Siteimprove to scan, prioritize and track accessibility problems, create departmental accounts, and link directly back to the CMS for fast remediation. Using prioritized lists and site-wide reports, the team reduced more than 40,000 WCAG Level A errors to zero A- and AA-level issues in nine months, achieving and exceeding compliance and freeing resources to focus on broken links and SEO.
