Wisconsin District Secures School Entrances with Visitor Aware

Wausau School District, serving about 8,000 students across elementary, middle and high schools in northern Wisconsin, faced slow, inefficient visitor check-ins that limited large events, undermined family engagement and created safety concerns for staff and students. Existing tools were cumbersome, led some schools to avoid hosting community events, and did not give staff clear, reliable ways to know who was in their buildings.

The district deployed Visitor Aware kiosks on iPads to scan IDs, capture photos, screen visitors against offender/watchlist databases, print badges and use facial recognition for faster return visits. The cloud-based rollout took roughly two weeks, used existing hardware to keep costs low, scaled easily for large events, and improved staff confidence and visitor experience; flagged issues trigger immediate alerts. The district also uses Singlewire’s InformaCast for mass notification and plans further integrations for enhanced safety and communication.
