VR Enhances TCCC Training at Aviano

The 31st Medical Group at Aviano Air Base, part of the U.S. Air Force, sought to enhance the confidence and skill retention of its medical personnel in Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) training. They partnered with the vendor SimX to integrate immersive virtual reality (VR) simulation into their existing curriculum, aiming to bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical application in a realistic yet controlled environment.

SimX provided its VR medical simulation platform, which allowed personnel to repeatedly practice the MARCH/PAWS treatment algorithm in various virtual trauma scenarios. The solution was highly accessible, required no prior VR experience, and was easily transportable for training across the base and with allied partners. As a result, all trainees reported significantly increased confidence in performing hands-on trauma assessments. SimX enabled the 31st MDG to run 3-5 scenarios quickly without resetting physical equipment, drastically improving training efficiency and ensuring high-quality, accessible preparation for real-world emergencies.
