Case Study: Vidant Duplin Hospital maintains LWOT rates and improves medication history collection with SIMUL8

Vidant Duplin Hospital combines simulaton and Six Sigma techniques to maintain left without treatment targets of less than 2%

Vidant Health, a healthcare system including Vidant Duplin Hospital, faced the challenge of maintaining its low left without treatment (LWOT) rate in its emergency department despite increasing patient volumes. They utilized SIMUL8 simulation software as part of a Lean Six Sigma initiative to test process changes in a risk-free environment and assess the feasibility of adding new roles without committing additional resources.

Using SIMUL8, the team rapidly built simulations that modeled patient flow and new processes. The solution determined that the hospital could maintain its LWOT rate of 1.7% with rising volumes by optimizing existing resources. Additionally, simulation tested the integration of a Pharmacy Technician, which was projected to increase accurate medication history collections from 10 to 14 per day. SIMUL8 provided the data needed to support proposals and secure executive buy-in for these improvements.
