Simulating the impact of a terrorist attack on the US food supply chain

Risk Sciences International (RSI), a global risk-management organization, was funded to develop a tool for simulating the public health system's response to a terrorist attack on the US food supply. The challenge was to create a highly adaptable, web-accessible simulation that could model countless scenarios involving different agents, locations, and magnitudes, and provide fast, accurate results for emergency planning teams with no prior simulation experience.

Using SIMUL8 and its advanced ASP technology, RSI built the web-enabled Food Attack Response Exploration (FAREx) tool. The solution allowed users to enter data via a website to run simulations on a remote server, which then returned results in easy ICU bed shortages, and plan effective responses, thereby helping to minimize the threat to public safety and potentially save millions of lives.
