London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), a major acute-care teaching hospital, faced challenges with patient flow and high costs when patients overstayed in the Intensive Care Unit due to capacity blockages. To address this, LHSC partnered with the Ivey Business School and utilized SIMUL8 healthcare simulation software to evaluate the need for and impact of introducing less expensive 'step-down' beds.

Using SIMUL8, the team created a detailed simulation of hospital patient flow to model various implementation scenarios. The software enabled them to analyze complex parameters and identify an optimal plan. The results projected potential cost savings of $10 million over eight years, identified optimal bed utilization, and established evidence for reducing ICU length of stay by up to 100 hours per patient, significantly improving capacity.
