Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust optimizes IVF lab resources with SIMUL8 to support 53,000 annual IVF patients

The Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust faced challenges in its IVF laboratory, where time-sensitive manual processes, limited staff, and constrained equipment created bottlenecks and risked staff burnout. To increase capacity and reduce waiting times while maintaining care standards, the Trust partnered with vendor SIMUL8 to create a structured computational simulation model of lab processes using Simul8's discrete event simulation software.

SIMUL8 implemented a simulation that replicated the entire patient journey, using features like an Arrival Planner and Routing by Label to model realistic patient flow and treatment pathways. This allowed the team to use retrospective data to test staffing strategies and identify process deviations. The solution enabled proactive planning to optimize embryologist workloads and resource use, aiming to increase efficiency, reduce waiting times, and enhance service quality and clinical outcomes.
