VTOL Technologies increased lift by 20% for its drone design with SimScale

VTOL Technologies, a UK-based developer of long-endurance VTOL Flying Wing drones, needed reliable aerodynamic and propulsion data to improve performance, range and endurance. To address this challenge the team turned to SimScale’s cloud-based CFD platform to run transient and incompressible-flow simulations and establish a repeatable design and validation workflow.

Using SimScale, VTOL ran comparative CFD studies (including ducted-fan and fuselage-wing blended configurations) with meshing support from SimScale’s team, which delivered measurable gains: a 20% increase in lift, a 2% reduction in drag and roughly four weeks saved in design time, while enabling a more robust design methodology for future drone generations.
