SolidTrust significantly reduced noise and improved working conditions for its car muffler design with SimScale

SolidTrust Technologies, an engineering firm serving manufacturing and research sectors, needed to optimize a car muffler to improve air dissipation, exhaust removal, engine performance and reduce exhaust noise. To evaluate multiple design options without costly physical prototypes, SolidTrust used SimScale’s cloud-based CFD/CAE simulation platform to model flow patterns and pressure resistance across proposed muffler designs.

Using SimScale, SolidTrust ran incompressible turbulent CFD simulations at 28 m/s and iterated from an OEM baseline to two redesigned variants—shortened inlet/outlet pipes, added flow diverters and straight fins, then added inter-chamber channels and angled fins. The SimScale-driven process delivered a 75% reduction in pressure drop and a 44% decrease in maximum velocity (with a first iteration already achieving 50% and 38%), about $40k in hardware cost savings, and is expected to significantly reduce noise and improve engine working conditions.
