Pollux Consulting used CFD in the cloud to test wind load on solar landfills

Pollux Consulting, a Belgium-based engineering firm specializing in waste processing and civil and gas-flow projects, needed to assess wind loads on large solar landfill installations. Until then they relied on hand calculations and costly, time-consuming wind-tunnel tests; to make simulation feasible for all projects they adopted SimScale’s cloud-based CFD platform to evaluate wind load, velocity and pressure distributions for panels across multiple wind directions and flow conditions.

Using SimScale, Pollux ran 32 simulations with meshes up to about 70 million cells (two scenarios of ~24M and ~70M cells) covering eight wind directions and two velocities, all from a standard computer and web browser. SimScale enabled detailed peak-load, velocity and pressure results, eliminated the need for wind-tunnel campaigns, and delivered more than €30,000 in cost savings while avoiding heavy local hardware investment.
