L&T Construction optimized lift irrigation designs with SimScale

L&T Construction, the Water & Effluent Treatment division of Larsen & Toubro, faced the challenge of designing sump-cum-pump houses for lift irrigation projects so that flow to pumps was free of surface and submerged vortices. To evaluate velocity and circulation and to demonstrate options to clients, L&T chose SimScale’s cloud-based CFD platform for its accessibility, cost-effectiveness, and ease of use.

Using SimScale, L&T ran more than 50 CFD simulations (hex‑dominant parametric meshes, multiple refinements) to validate and modify sump geometry and eliminate vortices. The work reduced problem-solving time by about 15 days, cut costs by roughly $38K across four projects, and produced ~60‑minute runs on 32 cores; L&T also highlighted SimScale’s online post-processor and strong customer support and plans to expand use to wastewater and effluent treatment.
