Fourier designs a next-generation electrolyzer stack in under 3 months with SimScale

Fourier, a hydrogen electrolyzer startup, faced significant challenges in designing a next-generation proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer stack. They needed to design reliable seals for high-pressure, corrosive environments and validate microfluidic flow channels, but standard engineering handbooks were insufficient and physical prototyping was too costly and slow. To overcome this, Fourier used SimScale's cloud-native simulation platform, leveraging its advanced Marc nonlinear structural solver and Multipurpose CFD solver.

Using SimScale, Fourier iterated through approximately 40 seal designs virtually and validated flow distribution, eliminating the need for multiple physical prototypes. This simulation-driven approach allowed them to deliver a complete stack design in under three months and avoid an estimated $40,000–$60,000 in prototyping costs. SimScale acted as a force multiplier, de-risking the design process and enabling the startup to move forward with confidence.
