ATAG Iterated Their Heat Recovery Design Faster Than Ever Before With Cloud-Based Simulation

ATAG, a long-established Dutch manufacturer of high-end heating products, needed to quickly resolve an acoustic problem in its I-series boiler system. A change in exhaust resonance had increased vibration and noise, and the team wanted to avoid slowing a cost-saving project by relying on physical prototyping alone. They turned to SimScale for cloud-based CFD and FEA simulation to analyze the exhaust piping design.

Using SimScale, ATAG ran more than 10 simulations in parallel, completed a mesh convergence study, and iterated on the exhaust geometry to shift eigenfrequencies away from the critical 120 Hz range. The result was a faster design process, a 70% reduction in pressure drop in a later iteration, and final prototypes that closely matched predicted performance. ATAG also noted that the cloud simulation workflow saved time and helped justify the cost of the project, since each prototype cost about 800 EUR and final tooling over 50,000 EUR.
