The customer, Shell, faced the challenge of optimizing its complex vessel transport system in the Gulf of Mexico. Their model of using dedicated support vessels for each offshore installation led to irregular demand, high vessel idle time, and difficult coordination with port facilities having limited storage. To support a new shared-vessel strategy, Shell needed to improve vessel utilization and coordinate demand through an IT tool, which led them to partner with vendor Simio.

Simio provided a probabilistic vessel scheduling software solution that used simulation for predictive analysis. This Simio tool optimized voyages, enabled vessels to be shared across fields, and maximized cargo capacity. The solution delivered comprehensive scheduling outputs, including Gantt charts and dashboards, which were published to a secure web portal for broad visibility. Utilizing Simio assisted Shell in achieving a fit-for-purpose fleet size and significantly optimized vessel utilization.
