AECOM, a global infrastructure consulting firm, was challenged by Edmonton International Airport to develop a de-icing facility plan to handle its rapid growth. Despite the airport's large size, airside space was limited, and the planning decisions carried significant risk for costs, operations, and passenger satisfaction. To address this, AECOM used Simio simulation software.

Using Simio, AECOM built a de-icing facilities simulator to model and test different configurations and operational scenarios. This tool allowed them to predict aircraft wait times and understand tradeoffs, resulting in a validated and expandable design perfectly suited to the airport's needs. AECOM's Senior Airport Planner stated that Simio was a worthwhile investment and that the simulator has become one of their standard analysis tools.
