A SimBex Case Study
Clark and Associates, an orthotics and prosthetics practice, faced the challenge of gathering objective data on how patients actually used their O&P devices in daily life. Founder Dennis Clark recognized this unmet need but struggled to find a suitable sensor that was unobtrusive, lightweight, and affordable. He partnered with vendor Simbex to realize his vision for a wearable device that could capture this crucial usage data.
Simbex provided a comprehensive solution, beginning with a commercialization strategy and followed by a targeted engineering project. They developed the OPOS1 sensor, a low-profile, clear device with a six-month battery life that could be easily applied to existing O&P devices. The accompanying system included a mobile app and cloud database to present clear, minimalistic data on patient wear time and step count to clinicians. As a result, Clark and Associates now has an objective tool to monitor patient outcomes, improve quality of care, and even empower patients to take ownership of their rehabilitation. Simbex also managed the transition to a contract manufacturer and continues to maintain the cloud infrastructure for the product.
