Gaining a Perfect Accessibility Score

Maidstone Borough Council, led by Transformation and Digital Service Manager Gary Hunter, needed to improve the accessibility of its main website and related council sites ahead of the September 2020 EU Web Accessibility Directive deadline. With over a thousand pages to review and limited time, resources, and in-depth WCAG 2.1 expertise, the council turned to Silktide’s automated accessibility testing platform to help identify issues and plan the work.

Silktide helped the team get set up, trained, and live within a week, and provided real-time accessibility ratings, in-platform guidance, and educational resources to support a structured remediation project. Using Silktide, Maidstone Borough Council raised its overall accessibility score from 62 to 100 for AA and 99.8 for AAA, becoming the top-scoring UK council in the Silktide Index and achieving a perfect AA score.
